When driving in Sweden remember these basic rules; always keep to the right side; always wear the seat belt; always have the dipped head lights on.

Motorbike

The helmet is obligatory. It is by law necessary to have the dipped head lights on.

Road Fares

All roads in Sweden are free of charge.

Rules concerning all drivers

Alcohol and driving

A concentration of 20 milligrams or 0,10 milligrams/litre in breath tests will lead to paying a fine, as well as imprisonment for a maximum of 6 months. Moreover, the driver will lose his license for at least 1 month and for a maximum of 3 years.

A concentration of 150 milligrams in the blood or 0,75 milligrams/litre in breath tests will lead to imprisonment for a maximum of 1 year. In addition, the driver will lose his license for at least 1 year.

Speed limits

Speed limits are clearly marked on traffic signs, on all Swedish roads. You wil be fined if caught driving too fast. When driving 30 km/h or more too fast, your driving license will be withdrawn. The speed limits are often set in view of animal crossing on highways and larger roads outised urban areas.
  • Absolute top speed on Swedish highways, is 110 km/h (~67 m/h)
  • Absolute top speed, on other roads, is 90 km/h (~55 m/h)
  • When driving a caravan, the absolute top speed is 80 km/h (~50 m/h) on highways, as well as on other roads.
  • In cities and villages the top speed is 50 km/h (~30 m/h).
  • Around schools and daycare centers the top speed is 30 km/h (~18 m/h)

Traffic signs

Always be alert for animals, especially the moose or deer. In the non urban areas, it is very common for mammals to make cross over. Mostly there will be road signs warning for moose and other larger mammals. However, there are no specific signs for smaller animals, equally crossing the roads. Accidents occur frequently due to animals crossing the main roads.

Bicycle

In many places in Sweden there are specific tracks and trails for bikers, If there are none, be sure to keep to the right, use your hands to mark the turns and wear a helmet.
