Västmanland is one of Sweden´s most interesting provinces, offering a multitude of different attractions, both historical and otherwise. The nature of Västmanland is full of contrasts. Nils Holgersson said in The Wonderful Adventures of Nils that, "the province was as striped as his mother´s apron. The wild geese explained that the stripes were rivers, ridges, roads and railroads" Västmanland is a province of small distances. You only have to travel short distances in order to encounter extremely diverse provincial nature types and vegetation zones. The southernmost part of the province consists mainly of Mälaren´s archipelago. Animals, plants and deciduous forests are characteristic for this part of the province. The middle of Västmanland consists mainly of prodigiously fertile agricultural farmland. The northern region is dominated by vast pine and fir forests. You are about to make a short acquaintance with one of Sweden´s most interesting provinces, well known for its nature and outdoor recreational opportunities. The fishing is excellent, a virtual haven for those of us who are interested in sportsfishing. There are a number of adventurous excursions available such as white-water rafting, canoeing, trekking and riding. During the winter, Västmanland is transformed into a skiing paradise. There are over 20 pistes available. Fans of speed can try ice-sailing. Golfers need not despair either, Västmanland sees to the needs of everyone. There are a number of excellent golf courses available. Västmanland is Sweden´s equivalent of Klondyke. During the 16th century the Sala Silvermine was the richest in the country. Iron-ore has been mined in the province since the 14th century. Since 1303 to be precise. Engelbrekt is Västmanland´s most famous son. He fought against the tax pressures of the then king of the union as well as the bailiff Jösse Eriksson. Västmanland is the one of the most industrialised provinces in Sweden. The largest industry is the giant Asea Brown Boveri. Among the local industrial giants is Nitro Nobel AB, founded by none other than Alfred Nobel.  Useful information Quiz game Contents About...
