Sights and Attractions in Västmanland: Handicraft/Manufacture Copyright © Westmanna Turism Konunga-Stollen15 km north-west of Nora, in Klacka-Lerberg. Stollen, which is German for mine-shaft, was mined for the first time in the 18th century in order to lead water away from the mine that was situated above. The main shaft, which reaches 270 metres horizontally into the mountain, ends up in a large cavern. The cavern has a large collection of minerals and mining equipment. The mine is open to tourists during the summer and is well worth a visit. The smelting-house and the blast furnace are preserved in their original condition and guided tours are available all through the summer. Manufacturing was disbanded in the beginning of the 20th century. The iron works is one of the province´s greatest tourist attractions.The Engelbergs works are on the UN list of cultural artefacts to be shared by humanity, one of only 400. OljeönThe island is actually called Barrön but due to the fact that the worlds oldest refinery is located on the island it has been dubbed "Oil-island". Oil, paraffin, kerosene, grease and lamp-oil were manufactured at the refinery up until 1927. The refinery is of the same type that was used in America during the 1860´s and is virtually intact. The mine is supposed to have been discovered by a farmer at the end of the 15th century. In total more than 400 tonnes of silver was taken from the mine before it was closed. The mining area consists of approximately 30 buildings, a museum, ancient monuments, open shafts and beautiful walking trails. Today you can descend to the 40 and 60 metre levels of the mine. There is also a film shown at regular intervals which depicts the history of the mine.
