Sights and Attractions in Västmanland: EastSala silvergruvaThe silver mine was also called "Svea Rikes skattkammare" (The treasure trove of Sweden). The mine is supposed to have been discovered by a farmer at the end of the 15th century. In total, more than 400 tonnes of silver was taken from the mine before it was closed. The mining area consists of approximately 30 buildings, a museum, ancient monuments, open shafts and beautiful walking trails. Today you can descend to the 40 and 60 metre levels of the mine. There is also a film shown at regular intervals which depicts the history of the mine. The mining area also offers handicrafts, auctions, silversmiths and a restaurant.Phone: 0224-131 45 Ängsö CastleEngsö Castle is one of Sweden´s most interesting medieval castles. Engsö is mentioned in writing for the first time in 1185 but its present exterior and interior were put in place during the 1740´s by the foremost architect of that time, Carl Hårleman. Nowadays, the castle is a museum and thus open to the public. You can see interiors from many different eras. There a two very large ship tumuli, graves in the shape of a Viking long ship. There is also a runestone from the middle of the 11th century which has a very famous quote and also functioned as a road map.ÄngsöOn Ängsö there are burial fields, a castle, a church, old farms and allotments, meadows and pastures full of wonderful flowers, a rich bird and animal life as well as agriculture and fishing.
