Nature in Västmanland
The Garden of Sweden

Copyright © Westmanna Turism The nature of
Västmanland is full of contrasts. Nils Holgersson said in "The Wonderful
Adventures of Nils" that the province was as striped as his mother´s
apron. The wild geese explained that the stripes were rivers, ridges, roads and
railroads. Västmanland is a province of small distances. You only have to
travel short distances in order to encounter extremely diverse provincial
nature types and vegetation zones. The southernmost part of the province
consists mainly of Mälaren´s archipelago.
Animals,
plants and deciduous forests are characteristic for this part of the province.
The middle of Västmanland consists mainly of prodigiously fertile
agricultural farmland. The northern region is dominated by vast pine and fir
tree forests. There are a number of nature reserves in Västmanland and
they all reflect the provincial nature contrasts and give the opportunity to
study the local flora and fauna.
The
fauna is
very plentiful and includes beaver, deer, hedgehog, elk. There is also a rich
bird life in Västmanland including ptarmigan and hazel-hen.
There
are a number of beautiful
lakes and
rivers that offer splendid fishing. The fishing includes pike-perch,
bass, trout and salmon.
