Nature in Västergötland

The most typical and unique in the landscape of Västergötland are the amazing plateau mountains. The material is diabase and formed into these unusual forms 300 million years ago.

The coast in the west, outside Göteborg, is dominated by the archipelago with its small, naked islands. Further east on the mainland the landscape is very hilly. In the north, you find farming tablelands, creeks and deep ravines.

Almost half the province is covered by coniferous forest. Especially in the south and east, there are lots of large and dense forests. On the slopes of the plateau mountains it is also common with big deciduous woods and trees like maple, oak, lime tree, elm and ash tree. Because of the limestone rock you can find orchids here in the marshlands as well.

The fauna in Västergötland varies a lot. At the famous Hornborga Lake, bird-watchers from all over Europe meet to study the rich bird-life. The elk safaris at Halleberg and Hunneberg are other exciting examples of how close to the flora and fauna you can get in Västergötland.
