Karlstad

Karlstad is the largest town in Värmland with 78 000 inhabitants. The town is situated by the lake Vänern, which is the largest lake in Sweden. During the Middle Ages a marketplace called Tingvalla was located in the same place as Karlstad is today. In 1584 King Karl IX gave the town its present name, Karlstad. Karlstad is the seat of provincial government and the governor of Värmland has his residence here. The town has many large industries such as Valmet and FFV Ordnance. Värmland's Museum and The Music theatre of Värmland are both situated in Karlstad as is the nature park Mariebergsskogen.

Arvika

Photo: Copyright © Värmlands Turistråd Arvika, in the western part of Värmland, is the second largest municipality in the province. It has 27 000 inhabitants and is located by Glafsfjorden. Trade and industry dominates and the most well-known industry is Gothia Tobacco. Handicraft has always been outstanding in the Arvika area. In Taserud, outside Arvika, is Oppstuhage, which is the artist Christian Eriksson's place of memorial. Outside Arvika lies Ingesund's Institute of Music which is one of few schools of its sort in Sweden.

Kristinehamn

Photo: Copyright © Värmlands Turistråd Kristinehamn is a town built around a harbour. It has 26 000 inhabitants and was well-known during the Middle Ages as a port and a marketplace. When ironworks became a large part of the industry in Värmland, Kristinehamn became an important port of shipment.
