Photo: Copyright © Värmlands Turistråd Karlstad is the largest town in Värmland with 78 000 inhabitants. The town is situated by the lake Vänern, which is the largest lake in Sweden. During the Middle Ages a marketplace called Tingvalla was located in the same place as Karlstad is today. In 1584 King Karl IX gave the town its present name, Karlstad. Karlstad is the seat of provincial government and the governor of Värmland has his residence here. The town has many large industries such as Valmet and FFV Ordnance. Värmland's Museum and The Music theatre of Värmland are both situated in Karlstad as is the nature park Mariebergsskogen. Hotels in Karlstad Arvika
