Welcome to Uppland, the province which is also known as "Little Sweden" because it encompasses small parts of all of Sweden. The famous book "The Wonderful Adventure of Nils", written by Nobel Laureate Selma Lagerlöf, describes how Uppland was created. The province received small streams from Västergötland, rocky islets from Bohuslän, Mälar bays from Sörmland, wilderness from Östergötland and heather covered hills from Småland etc. Nothing in Uppland is exactly small, everything is just situated a little closer. Also history is closer at hand. This is where Sweden was born and here many momentous events have changed the passage of time. If you want to experience a lot, this is where you should come in the summer. Everything is situated within a few miles, from salt stained cliffs and untamed rapids to majestic castles and open fields. Make a round-trip and stop off where the scenery is at its most beautiful, which entails a lot of stops. In a country where everything is closely located, travelling is no bother at all. "Little Sweden" has a lot of attractions for the younger generation as well. Uppland´s nature is full of contrasts as has been mentioned earlier, the only things that are missing are mountain ranges. Nature types that are characteristic for Uppland are the vast, multifaceted archipelagos in the south-east, the mountainous coastal region (Roslagen) with its many narrow cultivated valleys and numerous lakes, the flat country north of Mälaren and the vast forests in the northern part of the province. Of all these, the northern part of Stockholm archipelago, which is a part of the province of Uppland, is the most beautiful.
