Sjöö Castle

The castle is situated 16 km east of Örsundsbro. It was completed in 1672, the architects were Nicodemus Tessin and Mattias Spihler. Sjöö Castle is with its luxurious garden one of Sweden´s most, from a cultural and architectural point of view, valuable and well preserved castles from the time when Sweden was a superpower.

Uppsala Castle

The castle has been the site of many dramatic events. This is were the Sture murders were committed, Gustav II Adolf was crowned here and Queen Christina abdicated here in 1654. It was Gustav Vasa who started building the castle in 16th century. The site was carefully selected in order to be defensible. The castle was primarily built for the defence of the realm but it was also a strong indication that the power now was with the King and not the Church.

Härkeberga church

From the 14 century. The church has extremely well-preserved medieval paintings by Albertus Pictor. There is also an open-air museum, Kaplansgården, nearby.

The Uppsala Cathedral

The spires reach 118,7 metres up into the sky and when the sky is overcast they disappear in the clouds. The cathedral is built according to the gothic style sometime during the 13th century. The interior reflects seven centuries. There are many great men buried in the cathedral such as Gustav Vasa, Johan III, Carl von Linné and Nathan Söderblom. Saint Erik is entombed here as well. Pilgrims came here throughout the middle ages to be healed. The cathedral is unique.

Valsgärde grave field

A fascinating and surprising discovery was made here in 1926. Archaeologists found 80 graves, of which 15 were boat graves complete with cooking utensils, cutlery, glass, provisions, fully equipped horses and weapons. Everything dated to somewhere between 550 and 1050 AD.

Old Uppsala

5 km north of Uppsala. Old Uppsala is regarded as the foremost ancient monument of prehistoric Sweden. The three "Kungshögarna" (the royal mounds) are situated on a ridge and are visible from miles away. In the centre of each mound there is a cairn, under which the actual grave was situated on the surface of the original ridge. The dead king was burnt on a funeral pyre together with his grave gifts, which included jewellery and gold . There is information provided nearby the site in numerous languages in addition to an exhibition.

Örbyhus Castle

40 km north of Uppsala. The property is from the middle ages. In the 15th century a stronghold was built, which today is the nucleus of the castle. In 1548 Gustav Vasa took possession of the Örbyhus and made it the centre of defence for northern Uppland. Erik the XIV was imprisoned here from 1574 until his death in 1577. His prison cell is open to visitors in the summer.
