Camping

Within the Stockholm area, there are no less than 24 camping sites, some of which are close to the sea, others located on various islands in the Stockholm archipelago. Wherever you stays, the standard is high and the activities varies from bathing, fishing, canoeing, and everything else you can do in the water, to the discovery of the Swedish nature while playing golf, for example. Some camping areas provide the services of renting cottages for those who do not possess a caravan. Dogs are allowed in all camping areas within the Stockholm region, and there are some fifteen sites which are well suited for the disabled.

Hotels

There are more than 200 hotels and hostels in the Stockholm Area. The prices vary greatly depending on class and location.

If you are travelling on a budget, the Stockholm a la Carte package is a good deal. It is a limited availability offering available during off peak periods 217 days per year - all weekends and holidays year round plus all days from mid June through mid August. There is a wide choice of hotels ranging from tourist class to five-star. Rates start at $44 per person and children are free of charge. The rates include bed, breakfast and the Stockholm à la Carte card, which entitles holders to unlimited free travel by busses, subway and commuter trains, 3 free boat tours and free admission at 55 museums and other attractions. A $285 saving if you manage to do it all.

Youth Hostels

There are plenty in the city of Stockholm, including the ship Af Chapman in the harbour at Skeppsholmen, and about twelve in the archipelago of Stockholm, so contact any of the tourist offices in Stockholm. you can also contact the sight-seeing shop (Utflyktsbutiken) in the Sweden House (Sverige Huset) at Kungsträdgården. Restaurants

There are more than 1,400 restaurants in Stockholm, and the choices are many. There is a variety of Asian, Latin American, North American, African and European kitchens, so if You are in the mood for something specific contact any of the tourist offices, or check the yellow pages in the local telephone catalogue. When hungry, a place to eat is nearby, and the choices could be between a bar & restaurant, restaurant, a salad bar & restaurant, a pub & restaurant, or a bar, a salad bar, fast food, or a teahouse, again the choices are many.

Most restaurants in Stockholm have high standards and five of these have been granted with a star each in the Guide Michelin. Swedish specialities in Stockholm is of course the variations of fish dishes, herring could well be prepared in a hundred ways.

Budget travellers are recommended to eat at the Swedish lunch hour, between 11.00 and 14.00, as reduced luncheon prices are custom. However, some restaurants as for instance; pasta, pizza and Chinese, will have budget prices at other times as well.

For those who prefer entertainment while dining, please try one of the venues with a cabaret or show. The cafés and salad bars can be found in almost every corner, prices vary as do the dishes served.

A Swedish speciality is a coffee house where coffee and pastry are served, some also have sandwiches. They will serve coffee, tea, hot chocolate with whipped cream, as well as lemonade, and all sort of cakes are provided for, as well as pancakes and waffles with whipped cream and jam. There are especially charming ones in the Old Town.
