 Nature in Södermanland Södermanland has an abundance of water. There are about a thousand lakes here and a beautiful archipelago with thousands of islands. The archipelago has become one of Sweden's most popular places to spend holidays. The bed-rock on the islands are dominated by granite and gneiss. Södermanland has always been termed the "smiling province". The landscape varies between lush and fertile areas and more arid soil. The landscape is slowly changing due to diminished grazing cattle. Trees have been planted on former meadows and fields. Woods are taking the place of old farms. The woods of Södermanland are dominated by deciduous forest. The animal life is much like that of the rest of middle Sweden. The number of deer is relatively large. Some wildlife has also been re-introduced into the region.
