Sights and Attractions in Småland: North -
County of Jönköping
Astrid Lindgren's Vimmerby is an idyllic small town. Its history goes
back to the 12th century.There are lots of adventures for children and
adults. The visitors have the opportunity of becoming more closely acquainted
with all the characters and surroundings described by Astrid
Lindgren in her books. Pippi Longstocking became an enormous
success when it was issued in 1945 and thereafter she wrote many books
with people and landscapes from the place where she was born. Between 1945
and 1970 she wrote well over 50 books including Pippi sequels, picture
books, plays and film scripts.
The old town of Vimmerby with its picturesque centre and a countryside
with lakes for swimming, camping grounds etc. makes Vimmerby one of the
most visited tourist places in the province. For more information contact

Outside Eksjö you can find one of Småland's best known attractions,
Skurugata nature reserve. A paradise for everyone who enjoys nature. Skurugata
is Småland's stone cellar with high vertical walls of stone. The top is
called Skuruhatt, 338 m above sea level, almost as high as Taberg - Småland's
highest outlook.

Welcome to High Chaparall, the Wild West in the middle of Småland. Take

High Chaparall is situated between Nissastigen and European highway
4 at Värnamo.
"Gnosjöandan"- The spirit of Gnosjö
The people of Gnosjö work with a special sort of spirit which has been
named "Gnosjöandan". This special spirit has became so famous
that Gnosjö very often has visitors, who want to study this successful
little village. The municipal has only about 10 000 inhabitants. All the
small industries are specialised within the metal industry. There are over
300 manufacturing industries, which means one industry for every 13th inhabitant.
They are contractors to Volvo and SAAB.
Taberg - Småland's highest outlook

Powerful and mysterious Taberg rises over the forests of Småland."Ett
Smålands mirakel" (A miracle of Småland) exclaimed Carl Von Linné
already in the year 1741 when he saw the hill and the kind of rock that
does not exist in any other place in the world. There are many nice walks
to do and the view is beautiful. You can also go on an expedition in the
long drifts from the time of the ironworks.
The ruins of Visingsborg, once the most magnificent castle in Sweden,
was built by the Lord Brahe during the 16th and 17th centuries. A fire
devastated the castle, which was built of bricks from Alvastra monastery,
of which today only the south wing is left from the huge square-formed
building.

This idyllic little town is one of Småland's most popular tourist attractions.
It was here that the explorer Andreé planned his expedition to the North
Pole. It is also in Gränna where the famous Swedish lollipop "polkagris"
is made.

Visingsö is the lake Vättern's largest island. It is reached by ferry.
Departures from Gränna. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes. Up
to the 17th century it was one of the residences used by Swedish kings.
The ruins from the castle still remain and are a popular tourist attraction
in the summer. There are also several medieval churches on the island and
a herb garden with over 500 different plants. The most popular form of
transport on Visingsö is horse and cart, which takes tourists around the
island.
Brahe house - Jönköping
Brahe house, the castle which was built as a summer residence, is one
of Sweden's most visited tourist attractions. The castle is situated nearby
the highway.
Products of 300 years of manufacturing: weapons, bicycles, motorcycles,
domestic furnishings, sewing machines, chainsaws, etc. Collections of 100-year
old machinery.

Jönköping's match factory started in 1848, in the building which today
is the Match Museum. Here you can follow the history of match manufacturing
and the early manual working process. Here you also will find an extensive
label-collection from matchboxes made in Jönköping and sold all over the
world.

Outside Värnamo you will find Småland's second national park, Stora
Mosse. It is well-known for its bird-life. You can take wonderful walks
through the bogs and even overnight in small huts.
