Miles of forests where you can walk over the soft green moss and collect mushrooms or berries for hours without seeing another human being. Yet you will find elk, roe deer and grouse. There are roughly 5 000 lakes and just as many islands. We have the sea, the coast, the lovely coastal islands and plenty of untouched wilderness. ![]() Småland is one of Sweden's largest provinces. Here are many, as said before, different types of nature. In the west you can find the thousand-year old peat bogs with their biological archive over nature and climatic changes since the Glacial Age. The peat bogs exist because of the rainclouds from the west which empty their rainfall over the Smålandish highlands. The eastern area is dryer and the sun shines more often. The bed-rock is very old, 2 000 million years old. The most common kind of rock is granite (75%) and gneiss . Around Kalmar there are sandstone, lime-stone and alum. Småland's nature is definitely not wild but a cultural landscape, from very hard human work. This work has demanded stubbornness, sweat and ingenuity. Because of the size of the province, there are many different plant and animal species. Roe deer and elk are common in Småland. The elk's existence has increased a lot compared to one hundred years ago. One reason is that the wolf no longer exists in the province. Today around many elks are shot every year in Sweden. The badger is coming more and more and the fox as well as the hare is common. Marten and the lynx exist on a small scale. Useful information Quiz game Contents About... E-mail |
