A concise description of Östergötland would be to say that the landscape is a miniature of Sweden. Even if the province reminds of other regions of Sweden, its nature is still genuine. The indigenous population like to claim that their province is a mixture of the best ingredients of the whole country.

The ground consists mainly of primitive rock, which during the glacial period slowly rose and formed the highlands in the southern and northern areas of the province. These wooded mountainsides surround the productive flatlands in the central part. In the west, the natural border is clearly marked off by the broken landscape and the coastline of the lake Vättern and in the east by the beautiful archipelago facing the Baltic Sea.

A visitor will find that each part of the province offers a wide range of interesting areas to discover: The bird-life of lake Tåkern and Omberg in the west. Omberg is a beautiful elevation and rich in flora . Deep forests with remarkable fauna and the zoological park in Kolmården in the north. The Blue coastline and the archipelago with all the islands in the east. Furthermore, there are plenty of big and small towns worth visiting, each coloured by its local history.

Östergötland was incorporated into the Swedish realm in the 12th century when a local man was elected king of the country. Until the time of king Gustav Vasa and his centralisation of power, Östergötland was an influential and wealthy part of the kingdom. Many towns were founded and great religious, trading and cultural activities characterized this era.

Nowadays the province is considered to be one of the high-tech centres of Sweden, not only within manufacturing but also in the fields of education and reSearch (in Swedish).
