North

Bergslagen is famous for those who like the sensation of down hill skiing in the winter, and Bergslagen is just as good to go trekking in the summer. Choose your favourite spot either Storstenshöjden or Kvarntorp or some other place.

Ånnaboda is a recreation centre with wilderness, walking tours, angling, swimming, hunting or one can try out the pigeon shooting. There are camping-areas where caravans and cabins can be hired.

The Örebro castle was originally built as a fortress in the 13th century. Today the museum, the tourist office, a conference centre and a restaurant are located in this building which stands on the banks of the river.

You can catch fish such as; rainbow trout, pike, perch, char and eel in the Svartå river running through the centre and thereby dividing Örebro in two. This is free, for further information call Destination Örebro: 019-21 21 21.

Wadköping is the oldest part of Örebro. Wadköping is a little town completely built in timber and located on the Svartå river. Time stands still here and there are a variety of little shops and crafts exhibition. During the summer period, performances in the open-air theatre.

The Örebro art museum has a collection of both modern and old works and there are always a variety of specific exhibitions.

While in Örebro, visit Gustavsvik, Northern Europe's largest swimming pool and pleasure baths, a 50 metre pool and relaxation and exercise rooms. Open all year with a camping area in the vicinity. Camping open from may until september.

The museum of Technology in Örebro is located in a warehouse by the old quay. Yesterday's technology is on show, along with an industrial and maritime artefacts.

Karlslund Manor is a mansion from the early 19th century. Refreshments are served during the summer period. When lucky a riverside beaver might be glimpsed.

The so called mushroom tower, 58 metres in height, gives you a tremendous view of Örebro. A restaurant and a café allows for special view while devouring.

When in Örebro, why not take a steam ship across lake Hjälmaren, or even go to Stockholm.

Saint Nicholai Church, named after Saint Nichola of Bari, situated in Örebro is considered to be one of the most interesting church in Sweden. It was erected in the 13th century and holds the tomb of Engelbrekt, the Swedish Hero.

The museum of the Karolinska School in Örebro has a variety of stuffed animals on show, among others the last Närke bear.

On Stora Holmen, in the centre of Örebro, there is a miniature railway, pony riding, pedal cars and lots of fun for the children. You get there by boat, named Wiktoria leaving from the town park.

Brunnsparken is an outdoor entertainment centre with something to do for everyone.

Kumla offers an idyllic park, named Djupadal, only a couple of minutes walk from the city centre. The park offers refreshments, an amphitheatre, swimming pools, camping facilities and mini golf.

In Kumla there is an excellent shoe museum, a complete foot-wear factory and shoe shop. A special showroom exhibits footwear from the Middle Ages up until modern times.

Hampetorp is a perfect place for fishing and bathing on the southern shores of Lake Hjälmaren. A campsite, bicycle hire, boat hire, tennis courts as well as mini golf.

At Järsjö Hällar, not far from Kumla, there are ancient stone age coffins. The two cists are dated to 3 000 to 1 500 BC, the southern one is the best preserved one.

At Sannahed there is a military history museum. The hussar's officer's cottage and the impressive officer's mess are very interesting.

In Herrfallsäng, just outside Hallsberg, there is a nature reserve which is a green oasis of leafy meadows, pastures, and shady groves.

The nature reserve Dovrasjödalen is a deep rift valley with three beautiful lakes. The cliff side on the northern lake rises almost vertically from the water, an impressive sight. There are various hiking trails up to 6,5 kilometres long. For further information Phone: 0582-68 53 37.

Tisarstrand recreation area is surrounding the Lake Tisaren, and is well worth a visit. It is ideal for bathing and fishing and provides for excellent walking tours in the wilderness.

South

The church of Ramundeboda was relocated to Laxå in 1899. It is a wooden chapel from the 17th century with a wealth of wall and ceiling paintings.

Laxå glassworks is the smallest of its kind in Sweden. The art presented is manufactured in a traditional way but in a modern style. Exhibition and shopping.

Askersund has many things to offer the visitor, such as the harbour with handicraft centre and the marina with its steam ships taking you out on the Lake Vättern, in addition there is the Boat and School museum.

Sail to the Stjernsund castle. This castle is known as the one-time home of the Singing Prince; Prince Gustav. The castle was built in the early 19th century and the interior from the mid 19th century is one of the best preserved in the country.

Tivedstorp is a 18th century dwelling spot in the middle of the woods. Admire the work of the local craftsmen or stay over night in cosy little cabins.

Tiveden is a national park. It is described as the most beautiful in Sweden. There is a marked trail taking you to the small bay of Vitsand in Lake Trehörningen, where white sandy beaches provide for excellent bathing.

In Tiveden at Fagertärn, there is a little forest tarn with protected red water lilies. They are in full bloom in July and August.

When in Olshammar, be sure to visit the birthplace of the author Verner von Heidenstam, the Nobel Prize Winner.

In Olshammar is also the Chapel of Saint Bridget, renowned for its collection of memorable items of Sweden's only saint.

Bastedalen is a terrific spot as there is a Chinese park, with a Chinese garden, pavilions, reflecting pools, as well as oriental bridges. Remember also the Bastedalen Manor.

The Bergslagen Trail runs through Närke and has 17 stages from Kloten to Tiveden. It is a nice area for trekking.
