There is a manifold of small lakes and rivers which gives excellent conditions for the flora and the fauna in this region. Bergslagen is well-known to those who like the sensation of down-hill skiing in the winter and Bergslagen is just as good to go trekking in the summer. Choose your favourite spot; either Storstenshöjden or Kvarntorp or some other place. There are, of course, plenty of national parks and nature reserves where there are plenty of animals, birds and various fish in the lakes and rivers. Common are the moose and the beaver and other mammals dependent upon the water. Most common are the otherwise. Rare birds will be easily spotted wherever you turn in this province. Järle is a well-known nature reserve. There are numerous waterfalls and rapids and the area is also full of wildlife and rare plants. The Kingfisher is known to be seen here, if you can keep still enough! Tiveden is a national park. It is described as the most beautiful of them all in Sweden. There is a marked trail taking you to the little lake of Vitsand, where white sandy beaches provide for excellent bathing. At Fagertärn, there is a little forest tarn with protected red water lilies. At Hällabrottet, not far from Kumla, there are ancient stone age coffins (cists). The two cists are dated to 3 000 to 1 500 BC, the southern one is the best preserved . In Herrfallsäng, just outside of Hallsberg, there is a nature reserve which is a green oasis of leafy meadows, pastures, and shady groves. for further information please call 0582-68 53 37. The nature reserve Dovrasjödalen is a deep rift valley with three beautiful lakes. The cliffside on the northern lake rises almost vertically from the water, an impressive sight. There are various hiking trails up to 6,5 kilometres long. For further information please call ; 0582-68 53 36. Tisarstrand recreation area surrounding Lake Tisared is well worth a visit. It is ideal for bathing and fishing and provides for excellent walking tours in the wilderness. Bastedalen is a wonderful spot as there is a chinese park, with a Chinese garden, pavilions, reflecting pools, as well as oriental bridges. Remember also the Bastedalen Manor. By the lake Teen, in between Laxå and Kumla, you can see typical fen birds, such as the snipe, heron and crane.
