It was founded in the 13th century when a bridge was built over the little river Svartån. The city was gradually formed by mostly german merchants and thus, it became a centre of trade and iron craft. The iron trade was the most important sector of commerce until the end of the 19th century when Örebro instead became the shoe-centre of Sweden. When the shoe industry was as its largest, approximately half of the shoe-factories were in the surroundings of Örebro.Today the city of Örebro is different . Now there are several large high-technological industries such as the Telia Company and Atlas Copco, just to mention two. One of the largest universities in Sweden is located here and there is a centre of education for children with various disabilities. The Castle of Örebro, which is situated on an islet in the middle of Svartån, was built during the Middle Ages and was enlarged during the 14th century. Örebro was an important centre. The feudal lords, who was residing in the castle during the uprisings of Engelbrekt (The Swedish Hero), as well as of Gustav Vasa (who was to be the future king), opened the castle, their home, to these rebells and helped them. The city was ensured to be remembered . The castle was rebuilt during the 16th century many times and grew to an impressive Renaissance castle. The Swedish parliament held their meetings in Örebro in 1529 when the Reformation Act was decided. Again in 1617, when the first order of the Swedish Parliament took shape.The latest meeting was in 1812 when Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, forefather to the present King, was chosen King of Sweden. Today, the castle function as a conference centre, a tourist office, a restaurant and as a museum. In 1643, when it got its town-charter, it was a very important site as it stands on the lake which can take you further into the waterways of Sweden. Thereby this small town has been very important for trade on a national as well as on an international basis. The harbour in Askersund still has much to offer, such as glassworks, ceramics, a yarn and weaving mill, antiques, clothes, art exhibitions, and the selling of fresh and smoked fish. The boat Oden has an exhibition of shells and corals.
