The whole northern part of Sweden is a magnificent nature experience. Clean air, untouched nature and unexploited rivers. Here the word wildlife gets its true meaning. You have all the big animals represented; wolf, bear and lynx as well as nonpredators as reindeer and elk .

Sweden's largest predator, the bear, can be seen in both the forests and the mountains. They can be 2 metres tall and weigh over 350 kg. Bears travel across large areas and live mostly alone. They go into hibernation when the first snow falls in the autumn and come out again in April or May. Bears live of plants, roots and berries. As with all predators, they avoid humans and are not dangerous unless they feel threatened. That's is why you should be careful if you see a mother bear with her cubs.
The sites are only in Swedish, but you can still look at the pictures from the County.
The waste alpine region gives you plenty of oppurtunities to find your favorite activity, such as cross-country and downhill skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer. In the eastern part you have the largest towns and Gulf of the Bothnia with its archipelago and shores. It gives you other kinds of oppurtunities. From strolling the streets of the towns to go bathing in Piteå Havsbad (Piteå seside resort).

The fishing and the hunting in Northern Sweden are probably among the best in the country as well as hiking and other outdoors activities.

The Polar circle runs straight across northern Sweden. This means that the climate varies quickly during the different seasons. That is why the indigenous people talk about 8 seasons instead of 4, i.e.spring/summer, summer, summer/fall etc. Every season with its kind of weather and condition.

The geographical location also means that this part of Sweden have sunshine 24 hours a day in June and July. This is why Sweden is known for to be the land of the midnight sun.

Two of the most beautiful national parks are Sarek and Holmön. Sarek is situated in the western part of Norrland and is a 1 970 square km large alpine park with 87 peaks over 6 000 feet and over 30 glaciers. In spite of this, the alpine meadows between the peaks are famous for the wildlife and the lush vegetation.

Holmön is situated at the archipelago outside Umeå. Among the views are Öskär's graveyard, archeological findings from the 9th century and "Russian ovens" where the former residents used to dry fish.
