Youth Hostels

There are many hostels and mountain lodges in Lappland. Members of the Swedish Tourist Association (STF) usually receive a discount of 30%. The living facilities are simpler than at hotels and the opening and closing times may be restricted.

The mountain lodges are located along Kungsleden or in National Parks. These are operated by STF and offer a variety of courses, day-trips and other services such as bike rental and renting of wilderness equipment. Contact your local tourist information for details.

Farms

Some farmers in Norrbotten wish to have paying guest during the summer. You can choose to stay several days and partake in the work on the farm or only stay as an overnight guest. Bed and breakfast. Consult the nearest local tourist information for details.

Restaurants

Lappland, Norrbotten and Västerbotten has a wide variety of restaurants and the dishes are most often based on what nature can provide. Salmon and trout from the gulf of Bothnia or from the many rivers and lakes but also other Northern specialties from the forest and mountains such as reindeer, grouse, and wild goose. Fresh blueberries, cranberries and "northern gold" cloudberries are served fresh in deserts or in marmalade for breakfast or even distilled into liqueur.

The Laplanders traditional food has influenced some of the local dishes. One local dish you might like to try are meals prepared from "Renskav". Renskav is frozen reindeer meat that is sliced leaf-thin and then used in various ways. Why not try a renskavs stew?
Another local dish you might like to try is "Pitepalt". Pitepalt is a dumpling made from barley flour and grated uncooked potatoes. The dumpling is stuffed with salt pork and cooked in boiling water. The dish is served with cowberry sauce.
Be sure to ask for the famous Västerbotten cheese when you pay a visit to Northern Sweden.

Cafés

Exclusive cafés in Lappland can be found in Kiruna or at inns in the countryside. Most often however the cafés are simple and serve local specialties. This type of café can be found at campingsites, hostels and mountain lodges. The distances are very huge in Lappland, so if you feel like having a coffee and you see a café, do it! The next café may be more than 100 km away.
