Welcome to Jämtland/ Härjedalen, Europe's last wilderness, in the middle of Sweden. Here you will find great mountains and forests extending for mile upon mile. Great lakes, small ponds, purling brooks and whirling rivers. Some of the rivers are still untouched and run unrestrained in spite of all the hydroelectric power stations.

The water is fresh and you can drink it and fish in it everywhere in the province. Try to catch beautiful and very tasty game fish in the harbour in Östersund or in the mountains. If you visit Östersund or somewhere else near the lake Storsjön (Great lake), you better look out for the great lake monster. Many people have seen it and say it is six to twelve metres long, with hunches on its back and a small head. During the years people have tried to catch it but nowadays it is protected by law. It could be a relative to "Nessie" in Scottish Loch Ness.

Discover Jämtland/Härjedalen by foot, mountainbike, canoe or maybe on horseback. There are excellent trekking possibilities in the mountains of Jämtland/Härjedalen. Rent a canoe and discover the islands in Storsjön, the fifth largest lake in Sweden or paddle down any one of the many beautiful rivers. Rent a mountainbike and ride down Åre-skutan on the slopes, where the downhill World Cup on skis often takes place. Have a weekend on horseback in the forests and the mountains. Daily or weekly tours are also possible.

The people of Jämtland and Härjedalen are "the new Swedes" since the peace in Brömsebro in 1645. Before this date, they were a part of Denmark and Norway.

People have lived around Storsjön since 3 000 B.C. The rock carvings in Gärde tell us about the hunters and trappers who used magic and ceremonial rites to bring them good luck when hunting.
