Östersund

The only city in the two provinces Jämtland/Härjedalen is Östersund with 59 019 inhabitants. The city was founded in 1786 by Gustaf III. When the railway was built in 1879 the town started to prosper. Östersund is the economic and cultural centre of the provinces. It is also a garrison town.
