You would see a coastline with two completely different characters. In the south there is an undulating virginal coast with wide, white sandy beaches, high dunes and protective beachforests. North of Ätran the coastal plains cling closer to the shore. The coastline gets wilder and the sandy beaches are not as common as in the south. After Viskan the coastline turns typically "bohusländsk"(bohuslänian) with fiords, flat rock, coves and archaic rock islands. The Ice Ages have left numerous traces of its existance. The most prominent trace is the terracing which can be seen with the naked eye. This terracing reaches up into the Swedish highlands. Upon leaving the coastal plains one reaches the flatlands of Halland, which are renowned for their beauty and fertility. In the south, the flatlands are broad and appear to be smiling whereas in the north, the flatlands are broken up by ridges and mountains. The flatlands were not always as fertile as they are today due to the sand that was blowing inland from the coast. This problem was solved by planting protective forests near the coastline. Where the fields end, the forest takes over. Today you can see a lot of pine and fir trees inplanted after the rape of the forests in the 16th and 17th centuries, in order to restore the balance of nature. At the same time you can see beautiful collections of the indigenous, noble deciduous forests in which beech and birch are dominating . "Ätradalen" is a beautiful example of what the flatlands of Halland once looked like in perfect harmony. ![]() Photo: Copyright © Hallands Turist The farther east you come the more pineforests, lakes and tamed rapids you see.
