Gotland is one of Sweden's more unusual provinces. It is the largest island and one of the smallest provinces. Gotland was a sovereign country for many hundreds of years until it became a part of the Swedish realm. The entire island is still full of ruins, artefacts and memories from its period of greatness during the Viking Age and the Middle Ages. During the Middle Ages it was a prominent member of the Hanseatic league. The land of the Gutes has been inhabited for many thousands of years and the island itself has travelled the seven seas for millions of years. Once upon a time the island originated in the equator.

Gotland also has the largest number of sunny days in Sweden.
