Gävle has always been a very important place for the province Gästrikland and the rest of Norrland. Shipbuilding, shipping and trade made the town grow.The Gävle of today is a beautifully planned town with large boulevards and green and lush parks like Boulognerskogen and Rådhusesplanaden. Hotels in Gävle SandvikenSandviken is the second town in Gästrikland with 39 000 inhabitants. The town received its town charter very late, in 1943, but has existed since 1862 when the iron and steel producing company Sandvik moved their production from Högbo mill to Sandviken. It is a beautiful part of Gästrikland with a perfect mix of lakes and forests made for camping and hiking.The other three main cities, Hofors (Swedish only) in the west, Älvkarleby in the east and Ockelbo (Swedish only) in the north, are situated in a rich natural and historical environment with old iron mills, lakes and endless green forests. Älvkarleby, situated at the mouth of Dalälven, is also known for its great sea-trout fishing. Visit the rapids and Sweden's first and only game-fishing museum.
