The province of deep woods and shimmering lakes invites you to discover its breathtaking beauty and to take part in all the numerous adventures it has to offer. The province of Dalsland is sometimes said to be "a miniature of Sweden" and most certainly this is an expression which holds a great deal of truth. In Dalsland you can find a flora and fauna of great variety, wide plains, beautiful and wild streams and steep rock faces. It is all there for you to explore and enjoy.

Dalsland also has its very own 'ocean'. The east side of the province is bordering the biggest lake in Sweden. Vänern is the largest angling lake, in Europe, with a magnificent archipelago and wonderful beaches. The parts of Dalsland closest to the shore have numerous ancient monuments, such as rock-carvings or strongholds from the people who once lived in Dalsland during the Stone, Iron and Bronze Ages.

Right through the province runs the Dalsland Canal. It is considered to be the most beautiful in the whole country and was built in the late 1860's for the purpose of giving the industry modern communication and transports. The canal is 254 km long but only 10 km are dug out. The rest is natural waterways and together this forms an excellent opportunity for canoeing and sailing.

Historically, Dalsland has played an important role several times during wars; it shares a border with Norway, the neighbouring country. Sweden has waged war several times during the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Mining has a very long tradition in Dalsland. Already in prehistoric times, the art of making iron was known and put into practice. In the late 19th century the mining industry ceased to flourish and people had to find other occupations to be able survive. The immense amount of timber,of which Dalsland could supply, became the saving grace for the industries of the province. Many of the villages from those days have been preserved and are to be found all over Dalsland, as memories of bygone times.
