Find around Dalsland

Sights and Attractions in Dalsland: South

The Dalaborg Ruin (Dalaborgs ruin)

(road 45, approx. 20 km south-south-east of Mellerud)

What today is merely a ruin, was in 1304 a castle erected by the two dukes Erik and Valdemar, sons of Magnus Ladulås who was a famous figure in Swedish history. The castle was destroyed 130 years later during the Engelbrekt feud. What remains today is the moat, embankments, a terrace and the cellar of a blockhouse.

The Håvesten burial grounds (Håvestens gravfält)

(road 172, about 1,5 km South of Färgelanda)

This burial ground is a remain from the Iron Age and it is the strangest of them all in Dalsland and most certainly worth seeing. There are 10 large mounds, 3 erected flat rocks and 6 round stone-settings. The view from the Ättekulls mound is inspiring.

Hästefjorden

(approx. 8 km north-west of Vänersborg)

The area has two lakes, the big and the small Hästefjorden and they are both among the most well-visited in all of Dalsland. The lakes have a very rich variety of birds and around the lakes there are several observations points.

The Kroppe fjeld (Kroppefjäll)

(approx. 7 km East of Högsäter)

Nature reserve with beautiful sights and a rich fauna. In several places on the fjeld the view is excellent since the difference in level is about 100 metres. North of the Kroppe fjeld, around Dals Rostock, there is a relatively accessible hiking area with very interesting flora. Historically, the Kroppe fjeld is also of interest, because it was here that parts of the army of Karl XII marched towards Norway in spring 1718.

The hiking trail of Karl XII is 12 km, from Ljusebråten to Dals Rostock.

The Elk hills, Halle and Hunneberg (Västergötland)

(road 45, south-east of Vänersborg)

Halle and Hunneberg have fascinated human beings over the centuries. The formation of the hills began about 500 million years ago and they are about 155 metres above sea level. There are a plentiful flora and fauna and today the hills are probably best known for their population of elk.
There are about 200 elk on Halle and Hunneberg and the best time to get a glimpse of these 'Kings of the forest' is at dawn.
