Nature in DalarnaIn Dalarna we find all kinds of nature there is in Sweden except coastal nature. The bedrock of Dalarna is the factor which to a large extent makes Dalarna look the way it does. The existence of pine forests in western and north western Dalarna, can be explained by the bedrock of sandstone in these parts. Volcanic rock, like diabase and porphyry, is richer in nutrients than the sandstone. These two kinds of rock exist in streaks in the north-west and the north-east, and in those streaks the wood production is richer. Granite is a rock where ore can be found, for example in the district of Bergslagen, which makes mining possible. The landscape around the lake Siljan is a bit different from the rest of Dalarna. The reason is probably that a meteorite hit Dalarna about 350 millions years ago. In this area limestone is common. Most parts of Dalarna has inland climate, with a big difference between the cold weather of the winter and the warmth of the summer. The south and Northeast has the most favourable climate for vegetation. In these areas there are oaks and hazels. In other parts spruce forest dominate. 70% of Dalarna is covered by forest. The deciduous forest in the valleys and around Siljan is due to human activities. West of Siljan there are many swamps. Dalarna has a large number of moose and there are Roedeer, mink, fox, ermine and beaver. In the mountains there are wolves, bears, lynx and wolverine, although not in large numbers. The river Dalälven and its two branches mark the nature. It is also used for waterpower. The two branches rise very close to each other in the north-west. Both of them run in a south-east direction to become one river at Djurås. Useful information This is Sweden About this information E-mail |
