Welcome to BohuslänThe summer paradise of Sweden The keyword in this province is "water". Today there is shipping and freighting, paper-mills, refineries and pertro-chemical industry dependent on it; the sea has been the bread and butter for a long time. During the 19th century the sea was crucial for the great herring period with its many train oil boileries, for the stone quarries' export of granite and for the seaside health resort era that paved the way for the tourism of today. These are the moments you will remember for ever: Lying on the smooth sunwarmed granite slabs after a salty swim. Eating ice-cream on the jetty while watching the boats come and go. Having a moonlit swim at 3 a.m. with your new friends after dancing all night long. The early morning fishing trip and cooking crabs when back ashore. Enjoying fresh prawns (shrimp) and white wine on the veranda at sunset. Pondering over the intricate figures on the rock carvings at Tanum. Walking down the narrow lanes in one of the many picturesque fishing villages. People are drawn to these shores and the laughter is mixed with the sound of boat engines which travel for miles in the stillness of the summer night. Make no mistake, Bohuslän is special throughout the year, even if the summer is the most popular. If you come in the off season you will enjoy the quiet serenity and the open space. Be impressed by the archipelago on a stormy day. You will get to know the locals, and they will take their time to show you the special spots. The purity of the air and the water attract the scuba divers even in the winter. Bohuslän has got it all - the sea and the windswept rocks, with deep coves and lovely bays; the open fields and the meadows as well as deep forests with their small lakes. From the reassuring mainland or in the buzzing fishing villages, you can see the ocean beyond a protective necklace of barren islands. The coastline is brimming with life and the archipelago provides endless new discoveries. You can go lake or deep-sea fishing or enjoy water-activities such as sailing and canoeing. The history of Bohuslän is very interesting but also violent. The province has been the border area between Swedes, Danes and Norwegians for hundreds of years and it has involuntarily hosted countless wars. Thanks to its location on the coastline of the ocean, the trade was extensive during the Dark Ages. Even further back in time the inhabitants carved their history in granite - rock carvings - which are now on the UNESCO's World Heritage List. In later days poets and artists have commemorated Bohuslän in verse and on canvas. Today the province is known to all Swedes as a recreation paradise, with yachts from all over Europe visiting regularly. They use the numerous guest marinas, not to mention the archipelago with free of charge anchoring. Choose an island and be a king of your own territory for a night. Fish mackerel while sailing and then eat it over an open fire. Someone said that the three "S's" of Bohuslän are; sill (herring), sten (stone) and solsken (sunshine). Welcome in sharing them all with us!
