Sights and Attractions in Bohuslän:
Nature/Animals
Svartedalen at Kungälv
3800 acres of nature and wildlife
reserve. You will find perfect conditions for fishing,
canoeing and
trekking.
Brattön
This island, situated north of Kode, is, according to tradition, the
place where the witches went - to Blåkulla. You can see for miles from
the highest point on the island, 130 m above sea level.
Road 160 on the islands Tjörn and Orust
Instead of driving the E6 to Uddevalla, you might decide
to take the scenic route from Stenungssund onwards. It is slightly longer
but well worth it. Sometimes in the summer, it is even quicker than the
busy E6. You will drive along the seashore, past red-and-white cottages
with their own jetties, boats, high bridges and the sea is ever present.
Some tourists walk across the bridges instead of driving, to fully enjoy
the scenery. In the calm early mornings all the islands are reflected in
the water, not to mention of the colour spree of the setting sun.
Säbygården & Säbyleden, Tjörn
Säbygården, a few kilometres west of the Kållekärr to Skärhamn road,
is a landmark of historical and cultural interest, being a farm dating
back to the 19th century. It is also the starting point of Säbyleden, a
trail through a nature reserve containing many historical landmarks itself.
It is also known for its many rare plants. Trails and paths lead out to
the two islands of Säby, which are joined by a narrow strip of land. The
trail ends at the jetty by Stora Skuteviken. For more information call the tourist information on 0304-67 10 40
The shell mountain, Uddevalla
In Bräcke and Kuröd, outside Uddevalla,
there are 10 000 year old embankments, consisting of shells and clams (some
90 varieties in total). Climb up to the top of the 13 m high banks and
you might find a whale bone. Many rare plants grow here and guided tours
are made by Svenska Naturskyddsföreningen (Swedish Wildlife Protection
Council). Please call the tourist office for information on 0522-51 17 87.
The Maritime House (Havets Hus), Lysekil
Let your children - and yourself - discover the creatures of the sea
in this ocean aquarium. There is a touch-and-play section for children,
magnifying glasses for the tiny shoreline inhabitants and a tunnel through
a large fish aquarium. The exhibition hall shows how marine biological
research, both important and exciting, is carried out along the coast.
After that you are ready to devour a shrimp sandwich in the café upstairs,
with its fantastic view. Phone: 0523-165 30
Nordens Ark at Åby säteri
Photo: Christer Larsson
This is a sanctuary for endangered species from all over the world.
There is only one park similar to this and it is located on Jersey. Stroll
down the 2,5 km road surrounded by enchanting countryside while catching
glimpses of snow leopards, red pandas, wolverines, forest reindeer, Telemark
cows and forest sheep, to mention a few. Make sure to bring your binoculars.
There are fun activities for children and in the 14th century estate (Åby
säteri) you will find a café and a souvenir shop. Phone: 0523-522 15.
Travelinfo: Travel on road 171 towards Smögen. About 20 km before arriving
in Smögen, look for signs Åby säteri and Nordens Ark.
The Sote Canal (Sotekanalen)
The 7 km long blue ribbon winds through the countryside between Smögen
and Hunnebostrand. Partly blown out of high granite walls, it winds between
meadows with grazing cows on the eastern shore, while the western shore
is barren and magnificent. During the summer there are several boat trips
passing through the canal. Ramsvikslandet on the western shore became an
island in 1935 when the canal was dug out. Today it is a nature reserve
with 20 000 acres of rocky areas, heathers, meadows and groves of deciduous
trees. There is a small bridge connecting it with the mainland, but watch
out - when a yacht arrives, the bridge will swing to the side! Please call the tourist
information: 0523-66 55 50 for further details.
Tanum Sommarland (Funpark)
An adventure for the whole family. Waterslides, pony riding, teepee-tents,
swings and climbing stands, trampolines and much more. There are restaurants,
but also warm grills where you can barbecue your own meat. Phone: 0525-233 00.
Kynnefjäll in the Bullaren lakes area
This is Bohuslän's largest piece of untamed wilderness. There are walking
trails, lakes and many waterways as well as historic landmarks. The area
offers excellent opportunities for trekking, canoeing and fishing. Travelinfo:
Located 30 km north of Hällevadsholm on road 165. Contact the tourist office for further information.
Alaska
When the gold-digging lady Hilma Svedahl returned from Alaska, she decided
to transform the Nord Långö island into her own creation. She has used
stones, shells, flowers and water and the result is astonishing. The boat
leaves from Strömstad and it is just a short trip to the island which is
open the whole summer. There will be special festivities 1st-6th July.
