border fortress for centuries and was fought for several times, until it
became Swedish in the peace treaty of 1658. Come along on a guided tour
covering everything from the tower of Fars Hatt and damp casemates to the
lovely view of the valley below. During the summer there is entertainment

The Marstrand Island dates back
to the 13th century and it is "crowned" by the fortress, which
was constructed at the end of the 17th century. However, it took some 200
years before its inmates had completed the fortress. During the "Fästningsdagarna"
(the fortress days) the most popular of the prisoners, "Lasse-Maja"
and the others of his time come alive in theatre plays all over the island.
We recommend a visit to the fortress and the island itself. It is a perfect
full-day excursion.
Pilane burial ground (Pilane Gravfält), Tjörn
With its 50 burial mounds, it is one of Bohuslän's largest burial grounds
from the Iron Age. Travel info: Follow the road towards Kyrkesund. After passing the Klövedal
Church, turn left at the red and yellow sign Hällene. Follow the road about
900m to the parking lot on your right - you are there. For more information please call the
tourist office on 0304-815 50
Rock carvings (Hällristningar)
Keep your eyes open and you will find signs along the roads almost
all over Bohuslän. The most famous ones however are in Tanum (at the E6-road,
about 20 km north of Hällevadsholm). Here the 2 500-3 000 year-old rock
carvings are very well preserved. Two places that are easily combined with
a visit at the Vitlycke Rock Carvings
and Museum are Fossum (3 km east of the Tanum church) and Litsleby
(3 km Southwest of the church).
The Blomsholm Ship (Blomsholmsskeppet), Strömstad
This is the second largest burial ground of its kind on the Swedish
mainland. It probably dates back to the Viking Age. The ship itself is
42 m long, 9 m wide and the stern-stone is 4 m high. Around the ship there
are several burial mounds and there is a nearby burial ground as well. Travelinfo: 5 km Northeast of Strömstad, at the E6. Please call the tourist office for information.
