Archipelago hostels

The name itself indicates that the hostels are located on islands and you have to travel the last bit by boat to get there, although all the islands have regular boat connections. The hostels are of the usual high standards and as they tend to be popular, please book early. The islands are Styrsö, Koster (both belong to Strömstad), Valön (Fjällbacka), Bassholmen (Uddevalla, Lysekil), Gullholmen and Käringön (both Bästkusten). Camping

The 50 odd camping places of Bohuslän have a high standard and offer good service. They are located in beautiful surroundings, often by the sea or by a lake. More often than not, there is a choice of leisure activities. Many of the camping places have special facilities for the disabled and on some there are caravans or holiday cabins to rent. Private rooms & apartments

This is popular way of staying in Bohuslän, especially in the coastal towns. The locals sublet a room in their house, usually with a separate entrance and simple cooking facilities. This way you can travel during the day and stay the night where you like the scenery. Bring your own sheets and towels or rent them at the tourist office when making your reservation.

An alternative is to rent a centrally located apartment for a week or two, if you prefer to stay in one spot and do your own cooking. Depending on size and the amount of beds the price range. .

Youth Hostels

All in all there are 25 youth hostels in Bohuslän, mostly very well located in the towns. With the province being one of Sweden's summer paradises, you are advised to book a week ahead, especially if you plan to stay more than one night. The personnel however are very service-minded and will do everything to find a solution if you are running late. You can choose between dormitories, double and single rooms. Prices vary. Members of STF (Swedish Tourist Association) usually get discount. For reservations, call the local tourist office.

Restaurants

A special dish in Bohuslän is äggost. The province is located at the coastline of the Kattegatt and Skagerack seas. With a large archipelago, fish and seafood dishes have naturally become the speciality of Bohuslän. Mackerel, prawns, oysters, crabs, shrimps and many others are served in different and delicious ways in the restaurants around the province.

Bohuslän has a rich variety of restaurants in all price ranges, although there is one category which deserves a special mention. Usually they are small and hidden away, so it takes local knowledge and a reservation to enjoy their meals, with everything from the sea being their speciality. They bring you back to the old days with their authentic interiors of fishing-nets, stuffed birds and buoys etc.The visit is an experience in itself, especially if you arrive by boat,so it is worth the effort.

In the summer the cafés are too many to mention You will find them everywhere in the 18th century houses down the narrow lanes, in former fishing sheds, on the jetties overlooking the buzz of boats coming and leaving. What they all have in common is the holiday atmosphere, the ice-cream and the almost ever-present sunshine.
