Welcome to Blekinge
Welcome to Blekinge, the garden of Sweden! Small-scale, enchanting and beautiful. Sea and forests, archipelago, lakes and streams. Charming small towns, picturesque fishing harbours and small red cottage in glades. The province is described as "the three steps" in the famous book "The wonderful Adventure of Nils" by the Swedish author Selma Lagerlöf. The nature of Blekinge changes character three times between the northern part and the southern coastline; The north is composed of forests on the highland with many lakes and ponds, the middle part has a warmer climate with limetrees, maple and hazelnut trees . The lowest part ends on the shoreline and is decorated with beech trees, walnut and chestnut trees. The area is also known for its lovely beaches and archipelago.

The beauty of the countryside is probably what makes Blekinge something special. Blekinge is on the sunny south-east coast of Sweden, bordering on the wooded areas of the Kingdom of the Glass and the open Baltic Sea. The visitor finds himself right in the middle of summer. The history of Blekinge is indeed very interesting but is of a violent nature. The province has been the border area between Sweden and Denmark for several hundreds of years and therefore, involuntarily, hosted countless wars during the centuries. The area was settled early and was important during the Viking Ages. Blekinge has had a significant part of the Swedish naval defence and is today still a vital part of Sweden's defence . The city of Karlskrona is known for its naval base, founded in 1680. Blekinge is probably internationally most well-known for one thing - it was here a Russian submarine ran aground, hitting international headlines in 1981. Blekinge has a well-developed and varied industry, dominated by manufacturing. Farming is dominated by small farms and most intense in the southern part of Blekinge. The fishing is important. About 10 % of the professional fishermen in Sweden are living here. The armed forces play an important role for employment due to strong naval and military traditions.
