Gothia-Cup in Gothenburg

Gothia Cup


The largest junior tournament in the world, open for all FIFA associations. The teams are grouped in 4-5 round robins, where all the teams meet each other. The two first teams qualify for A series. The teams that end up 3rd, meet each other in a B-series. For the teams that do not qualify, coaching matches will be arranged. Both the girls the boys teams are ordered in age groups from 12 to 17 years of age. This is a very well organised event for youngsters and they can also bring family and friends. There are contestant from all over the world, the languages are many, but still, most will find friends for life from another country. The basic message of this event is friendship across all barriers. It is easy to find lodging, as the Gothia associations are very helpful. Some broadcasting occurs on the national television, and a lot on local television.

Lidingö-loppet, Lidingö

The 30 kilometre Lidingö-loppet is the largest cross-country race in the world, attracting some of the best runners of the world, both men and women. It is also a very large recreational race for the public. The record of participants is, in 1982 when there were 11 763 participants, of which 10 810 completed the whole race. The course is known to be very hilly for the last 10km. The nature along the track is beautifully dressed in all kinds of colours, the aroma of the nature is also very specific at that time of the year when the autumn is at its peak.

The Lidingö-loppet complies of the following choices of races:
  • M 22 15 kilometres for male contestants born in 1973, or later.
  • M 50 15 kilometres for male contestants born in 1945 and earlier.
  • P 18 10 kilometres for male contestants born in 1977, or later.
  • M 60 10 kilometres for male contestants born in 1935 and earlier.
  • K 22 10 kilometres for female contestants born in 1973, or later.
  • K 50 10 kilometres for female contestants born in 1945, and earlier.
  • K 60 10 kilometres for female contestants born in 1935 and earlier.
  • F 18 5,6 kilometres for female contestants born in 1977, or later.
There are several additional races, so for youngsters there is a race on the Saturday known as the Lilla Lidingö-loppet, i.e., the little race. The contestants are differentiated in sex and age groups from 7 years of age, to fifteen years of age, and the distances vary accordingly. There are quite a few youngsters who finish the whole race, and they are naturally very proud of themselves afterwards. This is a very popular race, among the young ones, nationally as well as internationally.

O-Ringen

An orienteering race , annually held in July. This is an orienteering competition of high rank, where both sexes and all ages are welcome. However, one should be a member in a club in order to participate. There are some 20,000 participants in these races, where a compass, a map, and a clock are the main tools. As it is a prestigious race, it will be broadcast on national television.

Stockholm marathon

Annually held in June. A prestigious marathon for men and women, as it is one of the largest in the world. While one is running, one will see most of Stockholm. The streets will be crowded with spectators cheering and applauding the vigour of the participants, and as an encouragement for the rest of the race. The finish is in the Stockholm Olympic Stadium. As it is such a prestigious race most of it will be broadcasted on National Television, along with our most important national as well as international news. The local television will also show most of it directly.

Course record is 2.11.37 by Hugh Hughes. In 1981 the race was visited by the "king of marathon" Bill Rodgers shortly before he retired he won a great race against Dick Beardsley.

Tjej-milen, Stockholm

Annually held on the last sunday in August. A long distance running race of 10 kilometres for ladies only. It is very popular among international and national racing women. In addition, the exercise jogger is welcome, and the participants are numerous. The arrangers are the same for Tjejmilen as for the Stockholm marathon.

Vasaloppet, Mora

This is the most famous sports event of all of the international sports events held in Sweden. It is a cross country skiing race of 90 km from Sälen to Mora. The first race was held in 1922, in remembrance of Gustav Vasa's escape in 1521. Men from Dalarna followed in his tracks persuading him to be future king, helping them to drive out the Danes. This race is so popular that there are more than double the applications, than there are places allowed. The latest report is that 12 000 contestants, no more, are allowed to start. The elite, as well as the exerciser is equally interested to join in, and is equally welcome.

Vättern-Rundan

Annually held in mid June, the week before midsummer (June 20th '03). This is a Bicycle race of 300 kilometres for men as well as women (from eighteen years of age and older), rounding the second largest lake in Sweden. The nature varies greatly, providing the contestants with a beautiful scenery. The contestants a plenty, as is the nations competing. The elite, as well as the ordinary exerciser is equally welcome, but one should preferably have spent a great amount of time on a bicycle previously. There is also the possibility for women to take the female race, Tjej-Vättern, a race of 150 kilometres. This race is held one week before the big race.
