Search and match Show results

To find information about a topic, simply type in a few keywords. The more detailed your query, the more relevant your results. Avoid capital letters! Don't put phrases between quotation marks, select "match all terms" in the listbox instead. If the word contains one or more characters not found on your keyboard, you might try to just type in the preceding letters, leaving the rest blank.

A note on funny Swedish characters and English keyboards:
The Swedish alphabet has three more letters not found on keyboards designed for use in English speaking countries: Åå Ää Öö. These letters frequently occur in names of places, e.g. "Östergötland" and "Västerås". Searching instead for "Ostergotland" or "Vasteras" may seem logical, but will not always help at present. For places, use the drop down list boxes with 300 names of towns and provinces. We will solve this problem during the summer of -99. Meanwhile, here is a temporary workaround for English keyboards, which should work in any search engine anywhere:

Å = { å = [ Ä = " ä = ' Ö = : ö = ;

So if you're looking for Björn Borg, try to search for bj;rn borg or just for borg.

We're monitoring what all you wonderful people are searching for with an eye towards improving the editorial contents. Maps and food recipes are in great demand, so we'll do something about that. Forget about porn, sex and nudity, 'cause we ain't got it and won't get it. If there is anything else you feel should be here, do drop a line to our web editor.

Our search engine also comes with some advanced capabilities to help you find exactly what you're looking for. These capabilities are very similar to those found in AltaVista and other major search engines and are best shown with a few examples:

Translated: require SAAB, require volvo

Finds "SAAB" and "volvo". Does not find the partly lowercase "Saab", but will find both "Volvo" and "VOLVO".

Translated: forbid SAAB, require volvo

Finds "Volvo", "VOLVO", and lowercase "volvo" but only in pages where SAAB i not mentioned in capital letters.

Translated: prefer SAAB, require volvo

Finds "SAAB", "volvo", "Volvo" and "VOLVO".
Documents with both terms appear higher in the list.

Translated: require SAAB (case insensitive), require words starting with "volvo"

Finds "SAAB", "Saab", "saab" and any word starting with volvo irrespective of upper or lower case.
The asterisk is a wildcard representing any four or fewer characters.

Translated: require Venus (case sensitive), require pictures, forbid planet, prefer images

First lists "pictures and images of Venus", then "Venus pictures".
Does not list lowercase "venus picture", nor forbidden "picture of planet Venus".

Translated: ignores common words like where, is, and the - requires words containing "frog"

Finds "frog", "frogleg", and "bullfrog".
To suppress the ignore feature, use quotes, as in "Where is the *frog*?".

Note on case sensitivity - only words or phrases containing an upper case character will be treated as case sensitive. A search on "saab" will match "Saab", "SAAB", and "saab", while the term "SAAB" matches only its uppercase version.

The asterisk is a powerful search tool, but has some limitations. It cannot span words - that is, the query "powerfu*earch" would not match the first sentence of this paragraph - and it can represent at most four letters or numbers. To avoid overly broad searches, the asterisk can only be used in words or phrases which have at least three alpha-numeric characters. A search for "th*" would be ignored.
